Boutwell and by him to the Massachusetts Senate; 43 pp., 5 folding maps; the maps age toned and the large one of Back Bay and Vicinity has short tear from stub and lightly tattered at margins, ring stain on last blank with penetration into last text page, still overall very good, untrimmed and unopened, thread tied into self wrappers as issued; one of the largest landfill projects of the nineteenth century, "After a struggle with the City of Boston for control over the project, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts appointed three commissioners in 1852 to plan and carry out the filling of the Back Bay. Boston lost its right to develop any of the area, but the boundary line with Roxbury was moved westward to put most of the new neighborhood in Boston. The commissioners rejected two imaginative plans for the Back Bay that called for retaining bodies of water." (ASA Footnotes, January 2008). Volumes Included: 1
